Course Description

This presentation explores the recovery from the internalized shame of addiction and trauma which triggers an instinctual “fight-flight-freeze” syndrome that contributes to chemical and behavioral relapses. An overview of the Anger-Shame-Anxiety cycle, appropriate interventions necessary to avoid relapse from anger and shame, and practical applications of the Twelve Steps and other therapeutic interventions to the individual with anger and shame issues will be given.

Learning Objectives:

1.Participants will compare the two types of shame: healthy and unhealthy shame;
2.Participants will define the neurochemical basis of anger and shame;
3.Participants will investigate the use of Twelve Step principles to avoid unhealthy shame cycles;
4.Participants will experience various therapeutic interventions strategies that treat trauma shame.
